Rarefied talent in data science, data technology, and analytics

Senior Software Engineer, Distributed Data Systems

New Relic

Job Description

New Relic
Senior Software Engineer, Distributed Data Systems
Portland, OR

At New Relic, we delight our customers by helping them understand their world via our SaaS platform. Thousands of customers use our products every day to monitor status, improve performance and diagnose issues in software, infrastructure and operations. The total data stream is bigger than Twitter’s. Now you can be part of it!

The Data Services team designs, creates, assembles and operates the machinery that powers all of the underlying data ingestion, storage and query functionality that make the platform go. We accept a stupendous amount of data from applications, servers, mobile devices and browsers every minute of every day, and there is more each day than the day before.

We’re looking for someone special to help us out. If joining the highly competent DevOps team responsible for high-performance data infrastructure critical to the success of a rapidly growing, successful company sounds like fun, we want to know about it.

New Relic is a great place to work, not because the Oregonian said so, not because the panoramic views of Portland from the office are amazing, not because we’re located in the heart of Portland’s vibrant urban culture, and not because we get a great feeling every day due to our software enabling other companies to do their best work. That’s all true, but what’s special about New Relic is the culture. We treat you like an adult, we strive to make you happy and successful, we look for improvement rather than blame, and most of all we value your talents and the unique contribution your experience, point of view, and innovation can make to product greatness and customer success.

Note that we view the difference between regular and senior software engineers differently than some other companies do. At New Relic, being senior does not just mean that you have a very high degree of technical competence. You also perform at a higher level with regard to self-direction, team coordination, and strategic outlook and direction than a regular software engineer. This means you not only solve current issues, but also anticipate, plan and coordinate solutions before they become emergencies.

For Best Consideration, You:

  • Are a professional software engineer and have been for several years.
  • Live and breathe multi-process, multi-threaded, concurrency, asynchrony, server.
  • Have done significant commercial work using statically typed languages.
  • Have substantial experience in both relational and noSQL databases.
  • Like working in a startup or startup-like setting.

  • Bonus points for experience with Kafka, AWS, Java NIO, Memcached, Redis, Cassandra, message-driven architectures, DevOps.

You also:

  • Communicate at both a tactical and strategic level as needed for project excellence.
  • Like and are effective at coordinating multi-person projects, including cross-team.
  • Prefer a polite and collegial work environment.
  • Solicit and incorporate feedback from multiple sources into your process.

To Apply, Please Send Us:

  • A copy of your resume.
  • A cover letter describing why this role appeals to you.

We look forward to hearing from you!
